The IFTA, a trade organization representing the English language independent motion picture and Television industry, estimates that its members produce more than 350 independent films each year and generate more than $4 billion in distribution revenues annually. Among the primary reasons the IFTA has cited for increased revenues among IFTA members are the following:
- Continued growth of pay television, particularly in foreign markets
- Increased revenues from theatrical markets due to the proliferation of multiplexes.
- Increases in the amount of quality independent products available.
- Improved protections against piracy in many markets and the opening of new territories.

National Assn. of Theater Owners prexy John Fithian: "It's not that cinemas are recession-proof. We always need good movies to do well. But history shows that the industry is recession-resistant."
